“Another holiday season apart.” Jamie placed another bundle of dress shirts into the carry-on placed upon the bed. A pair of Fair Isle sweaters, folded together by Allyson with arms intertwined, sat next to the bag. “This year is going to be more difficult.”

Allyson fiddled with the separate bag of not-clothes-but-still-essential-travel-e
ssentials. “We’ll survive.” Her tone was cheerful, but Jamie knew she dreaded their impending separation too. Yes, he would see the family…but Allyson wasn’t joining him for the cross-pond journey. She was metaphorically chained to her jobs (mostly the law office), and couldn’t get any vacation time off. So they crammed Christmas into their last days together before his English return; their gifts were simple, with an emphasis on silver for no particular reason.

“Everything’s ready.” Jamie placed his carryall on the floor and sat on the bed.

Allyson settled next to him. “Pretty much.”

“Maybe I could make this trip with you next summer.”

“If there’s any way for me to get off work.”

“You do have plenty of vacation time.”

“I haven’t done anything resembling a vacation in three years.”

“You deserve some time unchained from daily life.”

“Just escape and fly over to England…then I meet your family.”

“It wouldn’t be terrible.”

“Remember the age difference.”

“It hasn’t mattered to either of them since they found out we’re dating.”

“Once you bring me round the manor that changes our dynamic.”

“It doesn’t jump us into some different category.”

“Sorry, but I think it’s a big deal when you meet each other’s parents. It’s crossing a threshold, especially if they live far away.”

“You make it sound like my family lives in outer space.”

“Outer space feels closer than England when you live on this half of Earth.”

Jamie chuckled. “It felt like that in reverse when I came over here.” He put one arm round her shoulders. “You would certainly brighten up Nevis Hall.”

Allyson snuggled against Jamie. “You think flattery always works.”

Jamie grinned. “Your eyes always look incredible.”

“Now that’s generic.”’’

“I’m running low on compliments. But you know my intentions.”

“So what happens if and when I do visit the Big Family Estate?”

“You’ll have dinner and breakfast in a large rectangular dining hall, at least for one night because Mum likes to impress visitors, and we never use that room otherwise. You’ll get a huge bedroom with a four-poster and other antiques stacked upon each other. You’ll walk around London for a couple days if you’d like to pop down south…”

Allyson laughed. “Giving me the preferred treatment. Sounds perfect.”
